chondromalacia

so, after years, and i mean about 11 years, physical therapy, MRI's, x-rays, electro-massages, knee braces, ice bags, aleve, advil, tylenol, pops, cracks, snaps, tears, and a whole hell of a lot of pain: it all boils down to chondromalacia.
The condition may result from acute injury to the patella or from chronic friction between the patella and the groove in the femur through which it passes during motion of the knee.
it is abnormal softening of the cartilage of the under the kneecap . Chondromalacia patella results from degeneration of cartilage due to poor alignment of the kneecap as it slides over the lower end of the thigh bone.

that's disgusting. as of right now, my left knee is in a LOT of pain. there is a surgical procedure called Lateral Release. i was recommended to do that if the pain persists.
here's the catch:
2 months of recovery(that means crutches & NO sports)
&
it only has a 70% success rate
i don't know what to do. all i know is that my frickin' knee is killing me

Two notes:

I am on recovery for two herniated disks in my lower back -- and my choices were surgery or physical therapy. I ended up doing physical therapy twice a week for a little over a month coupled with heat and cold therapy, and pain meds. I took November off, then came back last week and he said I was finished -- and gave me strengthening exercises I could pursue on my own. Physical therapy worked WONDERS on me and i'm at about 85% now. It takes some time, but if you stick with it it could mean no surgery!

Point two: So there was this guy that talked my ear off on the plane ride from Orlando to Phili -- and he said he had a problem just like yours. He said that the docs wanted him to do surgery, but he said no thank you and instead of running (he's a big runner) he got a stationary bike and rode that for a year. Turns out, it strengthened the problem area and gave his body time to heal itself.

Just my two cents!
